I seem to be spending a lot of time in Saltaire these days. Because there's a lot to do in the area. But this time, I was just passing through.
Salts Mill & Leeds-Liverpool Canal
This is a rare midweek view without the hundreds of people, dogs, and bicycles that congregate at weekends and public holidays. I have walked here many times. But it never fails to inspire me.
After Saltaire village, there's a milestone showing 14+ miles from Leeds. And 113 miles to Liverpool. I often think of walking all the way for a Merseyside mini-break. But that's still taunting me from the bucket list.
Aire River Aqueduct
It always strikes me as very light and open as I reach the end of Hirst Wood. Where an aqueduct carries the canal over the River Aire.
Humpback Bridge
Over the canal, a humpback bridge carries a footpath that must have been an agricultural superhighway in centuries past. Now, it also allows towpath travellers to cross the canal.
I always love to look back from the top of the bridge. Then...
Turning forward, we see the two-rise locks by Dowley Gap water treatment plant. With the promise of the three-rise locks in not-too-distant Bingley. Followed by the record-breaking five-rise locks beyond. But that's for another day.
